Upper Saddle River’s Environmental Committee (EC) was established to support, promote and communicate on matters related to the protection and preservation of a clean, healthful and pleasant environment for residents.

In support of its mission, the Committee works to carry out the Upper Saddle River’s Vision 2020 Plan.

The Environmental Committee serves as a clearinghouse for environmental concerns of Borough residents and for ideas regarding new environmental challenges, issues and problems.

The EC makes recommendations on pollution prevention, including sponsoring the No Idling Resolution, adopted by the Borough. It supports clean water through its continued biological and chemical monitoring of the Saddle River by the River Assessment Team. It is also working closely with the Borough to reduce the use of chemicals town wide through education and the establishment of Pesticide Free Zones in and around the playgrounds at Lions and Hess Parks. To keep our Borough green, the Committee encourages all residents to recycle, reduce and reuse, underscoring the importance of recycling plastics, newspapers and electronic waste. In addition, the EC urges the community to apply the simple but important steps featured on this link to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of Earth Day.

As part of the Environmental Committee’s ongoing commitment to encourage community involvement in green USR activities, it participates in several annual activities. This includes USR’s annual May River Day. Designed to promote our young residents’ awareness of environmental responsibility, the River Day program educates Cavallini School students on the connection between our actions and the health of the river.

The EC also plays an active role in the annual September Upper Saddle River Day with an environmental tent where committee representatives are on hand to discuss and distribute information on subjects such as composting, CFL bulbs, pesticide reduction, and No Idling.

Members of the EC are appointed by the Mayor and Council. The Committee meets at Borough Hall on the third Monday of the month, bi-monthly at 6:30 pm. Additional dates are scheduled according to issues being addressed. The public is welcome to attend.
